I'm upgrading to a Nikon D40x and I am in the market for a housing.

I surfed the web, and the one that seems to be the " better " choice is Ikelite.

Is it because Ikelite advertises the most or is it really " the best bang for my buck " ?

Ike makes some quality and affordable housings. I owned one for my D70 before I upgraded to a D200. Definitely worth checking out.

I noticed you are in Montreal. You may want to check out Aquatica (also located in Montreal) - they make a housing for the D40X. Aquatica. This is the housing I went with for my D200. It is a bit more compact than the Ikelite, and I like the gearing on the Aquatica better than on my Ike housing. It is more expensive, though.

Hey Warren,

As a matter of fact, I did know about Aquatica been a Montréal based company ... but as per their web site, they don't have a housing for the D40x !!!

I'll verify with my LDS who is an Aquatica dealer ..

Thanks for the input

Actually, they do have a housing for the D40x - it is on their website. The model is AD40x.

If you're interested, PM me and I can get you my contact info at Aquatica.

Hi;

I sell the great Fantasea Housing for the D40x. Very nice design, new metal controls, dual adjustable handles and standard port included. Nice and small, lighter than the Ike or Aquatica housings It's less expensive as well! Comes with a 2 year warranty and one year flood insurance on your camera body.

I went back to Aquatica's site and there is no mention of the D40x housing on the french version ???? But it is on the english version !!!!

And may I ask another question ?

I noticed that on the Aquatica housing, the viewfinder seems larger that the Ikelite one. Will it be easier for me since I am nearsighted ?

I didn't seem to recall much of a difference between the two stock viewfinders on either housing, but the nice thing about the Aquatica housing is that you can add on the Aquaview enlarger. I got this for shooting macro, but I really use it full time for everything. The drawback is that it is pretty expensive - it's like buying another lens, which is really what you're doing.

i prefer aquatica housing to that of ikelight. for several reasons, one they are smaller, 2 aquatica places the controls were they need to be right at your finger tips and the controls seams to be smother than those that were on my friends ikelight housing. also there ports seem to be built better than ikelight but that would be expected because the aquatica housing are more expensive. the other nice thing is that you can add an optical magnifier ether the one that is made by aquatic or the one that is made by Inon. the one that is made by Inon comes in two styles. they make a 180˚ and a 45˚ i have the 45 and love it. they are very bright and allow me to see wether the image is in focused or not. forgot to mention that the Inon View finder also works with the ikelight housing as well

The Aquatica housing is only slightly more expensive than the Ikelite, and if you are upgrading
from a NikV, it's very close to the same because you don't have to buy an Ike synch cord.

The Aquatica housing also works for the D40 (no x).

Remember that the D40/D40x don't have an autofocus shaft drive. You either need a lens with
the motor in it, or manual focus. The 60mm macro and the 10.5 wide angle are notable by their
lack of a motor at present. The 105 does come in a version with a motor.

I bought the Aquatica housing for my wife's D40x and it is sweet! Controls well placed, and the slide-in tray makes it impossible to mount askew. Got it with twin strobe bulkheads, and you have the option of getting it with either Nikonos or Ikelite--with the Ikelite mounts you only need the TTL converter if you choose to use Ikelite strobes; or, you can get the Heinrichs-Weikamp installed if you choose to go the Inon or other route. FWIW, Nexus also makes a housing for the D40 for about the same price and it looks nice as well. Ports are more expensive, however.
