F*cking ridiculous excuse for a human being. Hear the other people in the room laughing?

The problem that no one wants to admit is that there is no financial incentive for training agencies, dive shops, instructors, or even sites like the SR to enforce stricter standards that would effectively decrease profitability in an already dying industry - and the number of Linneas and Dylans is too small, financially speaking, to encourage systemic change. Especially when they can lay all the blame on the instructor and walk away ignoring their own actions that allowed those instructors to exist.
^^^ As long as the cost to settle is lower than the permanent loss of revenue from that shop/instructor/facility...

That’s just disturbing. I can’t believe someone would think that way, let alone say it out loud.

Well, that is shocking.

Because scuba is essentially safe, the odds are that you will not have many fatalities, even if your safety procedures are substandard. That admission, that a certain number of fatalities a year is acceptable, is nothing more than an open admission that you believe there is no practical reason to provide anything more than substandard service, since that substandard service will not likely raise the fatality rate beyond what your insurance company thinks is acceptable.

well, 30 years in this industry I KNOW many volume shops that think like that, but most aren't craven or stupid enough to just lay it the heck out like that.

^This. Come on down, I'll introduce you to them.

All of the kids I certified had parents on site. I was not a babysitter, and bringing the kid to class and dropping them off was not going to happen. A parent or legal guardian had to be present.
In some cases, I certified both. I never had a problem with parents interfering. I made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that I was the instructor. Not the parents.
Sounds like you handled the situation thoughtfully and appropriately. Cool!

Wow... Sort of ashamed I used to order gear from those guys way back when they were one of the only big online retail operations. JFC you own a SCUBA shop and offer courses so maybe don't make light of past accidents under your supervision. No self awareness at all, as well as no accountability.

Thanks.. freaking disgusted

A lot of these are through Trident I'm sure, but I also see Huish, Dive Rite, Shearwater, XS Scuba, Oxycheq, etc. I've already tagged the major manufacturers on FB with the video but some may have more personal relationships - @cerich looking at you.

Dive boats and dive sites are going to suffer fatalities from time to time, and most likely the accidents were completely outside of their control, but a well recognized training facility with years and years of history- with that kind of attitude -from the top, no less. ????

Well let’s just say, the argument to “trust the professionals to train and protect your pre-teen” just got a lot weaker.

I bought some gear on line from scuba toys years ago, makes me feel sick I did any business with them.
