Just floating in clear warm water vs physical work in cold, low-visibility overhead have quite different risk profiles for narcosis, WOB and CO2.

In an ideal world I would never dive on air, realistically most of my dives happen on air.

Above which blood alcohol content we enter "DUI" territory?
  • 0.05%
  • 0.08%
  • 0.10%
  • Etc.
I understand that in some contexts it's necessary to set a fixed limit for the sake of enforcing standards. But in regular diving the point isn't to press right up to the limit and stop: better to use the correct gas instead of pressing your luck and getting into normalization of deviance.

The answer is simple enough (40m) but the question is having passed an arbitrary "limit" so what? As one moves deeper than - lets say - 30m then we should increase our preparation for anticipated issues. Narcosis is the obvious one and there is a solution to that which is available to those with the correct knowledge and ability to use other gasses. That use is not mandatory - it is a calculated risk and one which we know is not 100% agreed upon by everyone.

I would argue that deeper than 30m (OC) requires some gas planning, but I would not describe gas planning as "deep air" protocol.

But it is a great subject for people to get all fired up about. And that can be fun :stirpot:
