Heading to Indonesia next month and was told to bring a reef hook. I'm researching different ones. They seem simple enough but what are recommendations? Single vs Double? Single seem easier to hook and remove. Rope or spring coil retractable? Do you keep them in a BCD pocket or attached to BCD ring when not in use?

Stainless steel double hook on a rope is my recco. Nothing fancy...you can buy them for $15 in Bali. You can carry in a pocket or clip onto a BCD ring, whatever you're comfortable with.

I went to the local tackle shop and bought a big shark hook. Filed down the sharp point and added my own rope. Fits in my BCD pocket.

Just home from my first R4 and reef hook experience. I don’t think single or double hook matters a lot but I can tell you that you do want a longer line than the stand 6 foot length many come with. That is not enough to raise you far enough above the reef in current.

Another item I found even more useful was a pointer stick.

Do a search on here, there is quite a few ways you can do it. I was fed up with mess when stowing it way. My fix. 2m using a finger spool. Note, metal spool.

I'm using Highland's Jon Line, on which I've replaced the Garvin hook with a single reef hook (bought under the Scubapro brand but there's plenty available), and tied a boltsnap about 1 foot along the cord that clips off to my crotch strap D-ring. It works really nicely, mounted on waistbelt, packs away easily.

Here’s a simple way to make the line shorter quickly after using it underwater by daisy chain knot it, shortening the line from 6+ feet to a foot length to avoid entanglement. See how to do it in the video, below.

My pref is a single hook, stows better and one less tine to snag on your gear.
Also used a reel like the pics above with a good length of line.

I lost my reef hook with finger spool set in Komodo. I think I left it on the dive deck of Mermaid 1 and forgot to put it back in my gear bag during packing on the last day of the trip.

So, I made another set using 8-foot long 1/4” nylon paracord rope, a reef hook and 2 bolt snaps as shown, below.

Instead of a spool, I just use the straight part of the reef hook and the bolt snap as wrapping axle and wrap the rope around them and clip together the 2 bolt snaps. The whole set is compacted to the size of my palm as shown, below.

The set is small enough to fit in my BCD waist pocket, next to my DSMB.

The reason to have 2 bolt snaps is for attaching the reef hook set on BCD & quick deployment of it. I clip the reef hook end bolt snap on one of my chess D-ring. The other bolt snap would be attached at the usual place (loop around both left & right tummy D-rings). So when I’m ready to deploy the reef hook, I just reach up to my chest D-ring, unclip the reef hook and hook it onto a rock crevice, loosen the grip on the rope, slowly let the current lift you up until the rope is fully stretched up and the reef hook tip is engaged on the rock crevice.

After the reef hook diving, I can wind the rope back around the reef hook & bolt snap as before or shorten the rope into daisy-chain knot, (as shown, below) to avoid entanglement.
