Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

Just to let you know that a big container ship has hit the western side of Woodhouse Reef in the Strait of Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh today December 31st, 2009. She's not pulled off yet so there's no info about the reef damage and whether it'll be salvaged or just left there.

She's on the western side of Woodhouse. We normally do the eastern side. Some people claim that if she sinks she'll be in the 60 - 70 meters (200 - 230 feet) range.

Got the site description from a fellow instructor living in Sharm. It's a steep wall dropping to like 50 - 60 meters (165 - 200 feet), then some big pinnacles and a slopping plateau till 80 - 90 meters (270 - 300 feet).

If not floated, it's gonna be a tech dive

Yeah. A tech wreck would be nice, especially that the fellow instructor who described the site said the plateau itself is boring

She's CSCL Hamburg, 260 m (850 ft) long. Attached is another photo.

I am just astounded that a ship can hit this reef in broad daylight. It is so waay off route. There are two clearly marked shipping lanes that are a couple of reefs either side of Woodhouse which kind of sits right in the middle of the gulf.

I hope the damage to the reef itself is not too vast. It is on this part of wall that we look under the overhangs at about 5m for baby white tipped reef sharks... right where the ship would have struck
