New to California diving....any helpful advice?

I have never had a true entanglement where I needed to use my knife. It not sticky, there are no hooks, its inert. There are surface canopies that are too thick to penetrate directly through, but I bet you 99% of the time 20-30' feet away there is an opening. Th risk is way overstated for scuba, you drop down and swim over to a hole.

What I find is I occasionally snag kelp, either one a fine strap or my reg 1st stage. You feel the pull, if your quick and reverse you can back out. If your slow to send, slowly reach over and remove. Your on scuba, you have air, no panic. I dislike cutting kelp if possible as the more left intact the better the dive sites are.
